Scattering of light
The process of radiating light by atoms and molecules in all directions is known as scattering of light. when sun light enters in the atmosphere of the earth then this light is absorbed by the small atoms and molecules of the gases present in the earths atmosphere. These atoms and molecules remit light in all directions. The atoms or molecules or other substances which scatter light is know as scatters. Scatting of light depends upon the size of the scatters in atmosphere. According to ray light intensity of scatter light is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the wavelength of incident light, provided the size of particles scattering light is very very small as compared to wave length of incident light.
i,e. intensity of scattering light:
1/λ4 where λ is a wavelength of light
Some phenomenon due to scattering of light
⦁ Blue colors of sky:-
when white light enters from the sun to the earths atmosphere, the scattering of different colors takes place due to interaction with large number of small particle in the earths atmosphere.
the wave length of blue colors is much smaller then that of other colors is much smaller then that of other colors . Therefore the intensity of blue color becomes the major color when the sky is clear. Due to this fact sky appears blue.
⦁ The sun appears radish at sun sen or sun rise.
The sun and its surrounding appears red because of scattering of light. The sunlight of sunset or sunrise travels longer distance through the earths atmosphere to reach our eyes. The light of blue color is deprived due to large scattering of blue light of the particles present in the atmosphere and rich in red color. So the sunrise or sunset of the sun appears radish because the red color is least scattered.
⦁ The clouds are generally white:-
The clouds consist of dust particles and water drops lets their sizes are vary large as compared to wavelength of the incident light from the sun. So there is vary little scattering of light. Hence the light which we receive through clouds has all the colors of light. As a result of this we revive almost white light. Therefore the clouds are generally white.
⦁ Danger signal are red in color:-
When light falls on signals, all colors are scattered much more than that of red color. So the red color suffering the least scattering remains confined around the signals, which is turn illuminates the signal significantly. Thus the signal can be seen from very far of distance.
